Crybaby

This could often pertain to Teagan, but this particular (playful) post is about Aimee. End of (playful) post.

RogM

Oball

Recently we've noticed (much to my chagrin and Rog's excitement) that Teagan seems to take an interest in football when it's on TV. Some of my friends are aware that I dread football season for a couple of reasons. It means that Rog disappears into his man-cave on Sundays and it means that simply because I'm within earshot, I get to listen (ok, pretend to listen) to Roger describe certain plays that he found outrageous or fascinating. Roger may dispute this, but in the beginning of our relationship, I think I made an honest effort to take an interest in football. I sat through a few games and a couple of superbowls, but I found myself thinking that I would much rather be reading a good book or, I don't know, getting my teeth drilled at the dentist. I eventually made that pretty clear and I don't think that Roger entered into our marriage under any false pretenses.
I actually am happy that he finds so much joy in his Sundays during football season, and I almost always use the time to get other things done.
Last night was a bit of a different scenario. Roger was watching Teagan while I attended a cookie exchange. An hour or so into the party, I got a phone call from Roger, who was laughing on the other end. He said that he had taken Teagan and her toys down into the basement with him and turned on the game. Teagan grabbed a stuffed sheep, which is kind of in the shape of a football, and started swinging it back and forth, excitedly yelling "Oball! Oball! Oball!" ("Oball" means "football".)
For obvious reasons, it made Roger a very proud father.
Since then, I have been having nightmarish visions of someday being cornered in the kitchen by my husband and daughter and forced to listen to them rattle off stats and plays.

I Do It!

I guess I’ve really dropped the ball on this whole blogging thing. It’s been a busy few weeks, but I suppose December is usually like that for most people.
Teagan turned two on December 5. Rog and I took the day off and we celebrated with a trip to Build a Bear and The Cupcakery. Teagan didn’t totally understand the Build a Bear concept, but she caught on to some parts and definitely enjoyed herself. She chose a bunny which she cleverly named “Rabbit”. She really enjoyed giving him a bath, but lost interest when it came time to create his birth certificate and instead occupied herself by running around the store and trying to get out into the mall.

She fell into a deep sleep in the car but happily obliged to wake up for a cupcake, which she devoured.

She also had two separate birthday celebrations with each side of the family, and another party at daycare. Lots of cake and ice cream were consumed by all. It’s no wonder that kids look forward to birthdays!
Teagan also had her 2 year well visit the week after her birthday. She’s slightly below average on height and weight but knocked it out of the ballpark with her head circumference. 99th percentile!! For anyone that had any doubt, she is most definitely Roger’s child!

She’s working hard to exercise her independence. I am now well aware of how the “terrible twos” phrase came about. It’s a good day when we can make it through the morning without a tantrum. This morning she was in such a great mood that she couldn’t even pretend cry very well. (Though she did try.)
She’s repeating words and phrases all the time. The other day I dropped her off at the daycare and her baby sitter said “Bye Aimee”, so Teagan repeated “Bye Eemee”. She has the tune to her abc’s down, though the letters come out at random, every number is “2” or “5” and every color is “pink” or “wewow”. Every morning when I walk into her room she asks “Where Daddy go?” and she always wants to know where “Dappy” (Chappy) is. She loves to “hep” (help) me cook, make sandwiches for lunch, get my socks and shoes on, and set up the humidifier. She lets us know by declaring “I do it!” or “I hep!” Every night before we rock and sing, we have to make sure that each of her two “gingkets” (blankets), her “wabbit”, her baby and her bear are accounted for and in the chair with us. It’s always a very graceful process getting her from the chair into her bed each night.
Despite the tantrums and meltdowns, she is of course so much fun. She knows how to perform and get a laugh, she knows what buttons to push when she just wants to fight, and she knows how to melt our hearts in an instant.

Hi Freak

Roger runs every Saturday with his friend Frank. A couple of Saturdays ago, Frank stopped by the house after the morning run. When he left, Teagan ran to the door and called out multiple times "Bye Freak!"
Then a few days ago the phone rang. Rog looked at the caller id and said "It's Frank" before answering it. Teagan ran up to Rog, looked up and said "Hi Freak!"
She's also adding to her musical repertoire. She kind of knows a verse to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. We'll sing "Up above the world so high", and she'll sing "Up a ba ba ba ba high" over and over again.
She's repeating words constantly, she knows some of her animal sounds and colors (because we've read Brown Bear, Brown Bear 500 times) and we're also working on letters and numbers.
She's also learning a lot about time out. We've been dealing with some hitting, pinching and biting which hasn't been so fun. Daycare definitely has its pros and cons.
This past Saturday we tried and failed twice to have Teagan's two year pictures professionally taken. She was fine until we walked into the actual studio where she quickly became clingy and disagreeable. We probably should have just purchased the photos of her with her lower lip out, since that seems to accurately capture some of her more frequent moods. There was no acting out in the studio, she just didn't want to cooperate so we packed up and headed home. Twice. It seems as though we are face to face with the terrible twos.

Below are some recent pictures. The last one is after we got her all dressed up to have her picture taken. That's the best shot I got of her in that dress. The rest are of Teagan playing dress up again. She has adopted Rog's old Woody Woodpecker hat and loves it.

A Potty, A Song & A Bumblebee

Ok, I've been a major slacker lately. Well, on the blog anyway. Though this is usually fun for me, it's not a high priority.
We've had some pretty fun developments in the past few weeks. Teagan is still obsessed with Elmo, but now she's chiming in when I find myself absentmindedly humming "Elmo's Song" because it's CONSTANTLY in my head. But her little "ya ya ya's" and the grinning head-bob that go with them make me laugh every time.
We took her out trick or treating on Halloween. She was our little bumblebee.

She wasn't quite sure what to think at first, but she quickly got the hang of it. Each time a homeowner held out a bowl of candy, she reached in and scooped up the biggest handful she could manage. (I made her put back all but one piece each time!) She was sound asleep in her carseat by the time we got home that night.
In other very exciting news, the potty training process has begun! We bought a seat a couple of months ago and have had it in the bathroom ever since. We haven't pressured her to use it, but we talk about it and read a book to her about it. This weekend she came to us and let us know that she needed to go, and so she did! She has done it once again since, and we know there's a lot more work involved in perfecting the process, but we're excited that we've reached the starting point. Stickers and applause are amazing incentives!

Eight Years

Rog and I recently reached 8 years of marriage. Having very successfully made it past the "Seven Year Itch", we decided it called for a little extra celebration. Roger had the idea to go down to Memphis, and his parents graciously offered to watch Teagan for a night. It was a great plan and it all worked out very well. Teagan had a great time performing for Grandma and Grandpa, dressing up (of course), playing with sidewalk chalk and Misty the dog.

I'm not sure she even really missed us. We of course missed her, but had our own fun by eating a relaxed dinner at an unbelievably delicious Brazilian Steakhouse and spending some time people watching on Beale Street. A fun time was had by all. Teagan also completed her first somersaults this weekend, one of which we managed to catch on video.

Sunny Days, Sweepin' the Clouds Away

We kept ourselves busy this weekend and had a really good time. Saturday afternoon we got a special visit from Cape Grandma and Grandpa for a few hours, so we went to lunch and Teagan made sure to properly entertain them before she went down for her nap and they headed back to Cape. After her nap we had an Elmo-themed birthday party to attend for her friend Nora. Teagan's latest obsession is Elmo, so as we were driving down the street toward their house, she spotted the balloons and started yelling "Melmo! Melmo!" The party was a lot of fun, and all of the kids got to decorate their own little pumpkins outside on the driveway, which was a very fun and very messy activity.
When finished with their pumpkins, they headed inside covered in various splotches of blue, red, yellow and green to sing happy birthday and partake in some bright red Elmo cupcakes. After the cupcakes, it was funny to see a bunch of little toddlers running around with red dye smeared all over their mouths. They looked like little mini Ronald McDonalds...or Draculas, take your pick! Sunday we took an unplanned trip to the zoo to take advantage of the gorgeous weather. It was fun to see Teagan actually watching and getting excited about some of the animals. She seemed to especially enjoy watching the monkeys and the penguins. I'll close this with a few pictures of the zoo and a mini video of Teagan watching her new friend "Melmo".

Victorious Secret

That's the name of the new softball team that Rog and I joined. Last night was our first game, a double header. One game started at 9:15 and the second game started at 10:15. Ouch. This is a sad thing to say, but I got more exercise last night than I have in months, and I am hurting today. Having used muscles that we don't normally use, Rog and I have both been limping around the house. I bent down this morning and wasn't sure I'd be able to get back up. The good news is that we actually won one of the games! And of course we had a lot of fun, which is the important part.
In other news, Teagan seems to be getting her 2 year molars in. This past week and a half her nose and mouth have been like fountains. I think we're averaging about 3-4 shirt changes per day. Of course she won't wear a bib anymore, she just pulls it off, so we have our work cut out for us trying to keep her dry. I hope it passes soon.
Her new favorite phrases are "dopit" (stop it) and "mere" (come here, which she says as she grabs our hands and pulls). She has also started figuring out how best to get what and/or where she wants. We have a kitchen cabinet that is mostly dedicated to Teagan's food and dishes. She likes to look inside and pull stuff out, but it's out of her reach. If I'm standing in the kitchen, she'll come up and gently push me toward her cabinet. Then she'll tug on my pants to swivel me around so that I'm facing the cabinet, and hold her arms up for me to pick her up. She did this yesterday with the light switch, too. It really makes me laugh.
Last weekend we went to a parade. I was really excited that it didn't rain because I knew that Teagan would enjoy it more this year than last. She loved waving to people, catching candy so she could put it in the bag, and dancing to the music. I think she had a pretty good time.

Butterfly Kisses

This weekend we took advantage of the beautiful weather by taking a trip to Faust Park. We took this same trip about a year ago, (see first picture), but Teagan was able to enjoy it a bit more this time around.
First, we hit the carousel. Teagan got to ride it twice, once with Daddy and once with Mommy. Before it started up the first time, she was getting a little anxious and nervous. She kept trying to squirm off of Rog's lap. But once the music started up and the horses started moving, her eyes widened and her face lit up. I know I looked like a crazy person on the sidelines taking a picture and waving like a maniac each time they came around, but hey, I got some decent pictures. After the carousel we walked out to a nearby playground. I think we probably could have saved gas money and admission fees because this is the part that Teagan liked the best. She LOVES playgrounds. And not the little kid ones, but the tall big kid ones, as my mom found out for herself one day. So we spent a good amount of time mostly chasing Teagan around the playground and trying to keep her from running into others' legs (stationary or swinging), falling through any holes, or somersaulting down any slides. When Rog and I decided that we were worn out, we dragged her (kicking and screaming) from the playground and into the Butterfly House. It was getting close to naptime, so she did mellow out a bit while we were inside. We had forgotten that they simulate a tropical setting, so it was rather hot and uncomfortable inside, but we saw some beautiful butterflies, and Teagan was very good about looking and not trying to touch. Overall, it was a fun day. When we walked out, Teagan's hair had curled significantly due to the humidity inside. (See below!)

Where is the "Good" in Goodbye?

Yesterday we said our final goodbye to our pastor and his family. It was a bittersweet day filled with laughter and a lot of tears. Brian lead our church for 14 years, and Rog and I were with him for 10 of those years. He and his family have become personal friends and have made a permanent imprint on our hearts. We will never forget them.
How lucky we are to have known these people that have been so hard to say goodbye to.

Water Baby

Yesterday was a spontaneously fun day. Rog ended up getting off of work early, so I decided to take off a couple hours early, and we picked up Teagan to take her to the pool. The girl at daycare told us that they had tried to get her to go to sleep for her nap, but she and her friend Jocelyn had instead figured out how to fold the mattresses in their cribs and bounce on them, so they spent their naptime occupying themselves that way instead.
After learning of the lack of a nap, I was a bit apprehensive about taking her to the pool, but we decided to go for it. We were meeting Aunt Erin and some friends and were looking forward to it. She fell into a deep sleep in the car on the way there. We got her out of the carseat, in through the gates, laid her down on a lounge chair and smothered her with sunblock, and she peacefully snoozed through it all. Finally we took her into the pool with us and carefully splashed a little water on her to wake her, but not shock or startle her. She did finally wake up and she was in a surprisingly great mood. The water was a little cold, but it didn’t seem to bother her much. She got to play with her buddies Quinn and Brendan for a little while, and she loved watching her daddy jump off of the diving board. (She wanted to give it a try, too!) We all had a really good time!

There's No Place Like Home

Thank you Aunt Erin, for the sparkly ruby slippers that Teagan has attached herself to so completely. Playing dress up is now a multiple time daily affair in our household.
Saturday morning, our daughter went to spend the night at Mimi and Poppi's house, and she came back home on Sunday with lots of treasures. Some new shoes, a "new" purse, and lots of "new" costume jewelry. She's been walking around our house decked out in shorts, a t-shirt, her ruby slippers, her purple patchwork purse, and piles of necklaces around her neck and on her head (some necklaces don't fit over her head, so she just sets them on top and thinks it's hilarious.)
The things she has been picking up lately are amazing me. Yesterday she wanted to brush her teeth at the same time that I was, and she had to have me pick her up and hold her over the sink so she could "spit". She's even gotten into my makeup bag and gone through the motions of putting it on herself. It's like having my own little shadow every day. We'll ask her to say words, and even though a lot of times her words don't sound anything like our words, she says them with confidence and usually gets the inflection exactly right. I never knew having a toddler could be this much fun!

So You Think You Can Dance?

Has anyone out there been watching "So You Think You Can Dance" this season? I started watching last season and enjoyed it, but this time around I absolutely fell in love Katee and Joshua, Twitch and Kherrington, and Mark and Chelsie. And I love Cat, too! I've been faithfully sitting on my wooden kitchen chair in my bare bedroom with the TV on the floor watching since the show started in May. (Yes, the bedroom is still under construction, but my Tivo is still plugged in!) I've even burned each episode on to a DVD, as well as burning a compilation of all of my favorite dances so that I can watch them over and over again. I'm not sure how I can adore and appreciate dance so much when I've never made it through a single dance class in my life. I actually did try to take a class a couple of years ago and it was laughable. I can barely put one foot in front of the other without falling on my face, but then again maybe that makes me appreciate the strength and grace that dancers have even more!
Anyway, kind of a random post, but since the finale was last night, (and it was an awesome finale), I've been thinking about it most of the day.

Fabulous Fun Friday

Friday was an interesting day. When I woke up, my head felt about 3 times larger than actual size from the cold that I had felt coming on. When Teagan woke up, I was upset to see that her finger looked infected, so I knew we had to get her in to see the doctor. Fortunately I was able to arrange to work from home that day. Since the appointment wasn't until almost noon, I took her to daycare for a few hours so that I could get some work done. I estimated that I would be able to use my lunch hour to pick her up, take her to see the doc, drop off the prescription to be filled and drop her back off at daycare in about an hour. Wishful thinking. We got to the doctor's office, waited almost an hour before we saw anyone, then we were given the prescription and asked to go to St. John's hospital to get the finger x-rayed to rule out any possibility of a fracture and infection of the bone. By about 12:30 (45 minutes past her normal lunch time and 30 minutes past her naptime), we were on our way to the hospital. Fortunately, the hospital really had their act together, so there is no nightmarish story of waiting for hours. Overall we were only there for about an hour, though it wasn't all that fun with a relentlessly runny albeit stuffy nose and a crabby, tired, hungry toddler that insisted on mowing down innocent bystanders with her stroller in the waiting room and REALLY didn't want to hold her hand still for the x-ray. After the x-ray we had to wait for the results and Teagan was sawing logs within two minutes of us sitting back down in the waiting room. Fortunately there was no fracture, which I kind of figured, but better safe than sorry. I brought her home instead of taking her back to daycare so that she could get better sleep. (She slept obliviously through all of the transfers). Once I laid her down, I realized how awful I felt, so I closed my eyes to rest and opened them an hour and a half later when Rog got home from work. (Oops!) So much for a productive work day...
I ended up sleeping even more on Saturday (sorry I missed the Fortel's gathering, gang!) but when Saturday afternoon rolled around, I started feeling much better. Teagan has been on the antibiotic for 3 days now, and her finger already looks so much better. It looks like we're on the upswing!

Southpaws Rule!

Roger and I have been trying to figure out if Teagan prefers to use one hand over the other. Rog is rooting for her to be right handed, I wouldn't mind a little lefty like myself. But she hasn't really shown a preference, and seems to use both hands interchangeably.
However, she had a minor accident at daycare on Tuesday. I'll spare the details so it doesn't make anyone squirm, but she lost an entire fingernail on her right hand. We've been taking great care to treat it and clean it, but it's obviously very sore. Her right hand now remains carefully suspended in the air while she uses her left to do everything. I have to wonder if this short period of time will actually force her to choose her left hand over her right. It will be interesting to find out.
Below is yet another dress up session. Teagan is wearing an Okie Dokie onesie hanging loose for the summer season, accessorized with a brown leather belt and glittery Snow White pumps two sizes too big. For extra flair, she has added a white barrette and a "Hello Kitty" bandage on her finger. Fabulous!

Clownin' Around

Our Parents as Teachers rep, Telia, paid a visit last night. We’re always curious to see whether Teagan will be in a cooperative mood. We usually start of by listing Teagan’s latest milestones, achievements, words, etc, and then we play a game to test some of her skills. Last night Rog and I had to go through several cards with pictures of actions, and pick out 3 or 4 that we knew she could do. She nailed the first few: close the door, find your shoes, go get a book, but she apparently bored of this game quickly. When we asked her to blow kisses (which we know she can do very well), she stuck a bucket over her head and laughed. As Rog pointed out, this was especially funny since she refuses to wear hats.

We need to work a little more on vocalizing objects for her so she can pick those words up, but we know that she understands commands very well. It just depends on her mood whether she will follow instructions. She can be quite stubborn. (I wonder where she gets that?) Though her words last night were few, as Telia got up to leave, Teagan grabbed her shape sorter, and quickly begin picking up shapes and depositing them in the correct holes, turning the sorter or the blocks to get them to go in. I beamed with pride. Speaking isn’t my strong point either. =)

The obsession with shoes continues. Whether they’re her own or ours, she insists on trying on different pairs and walking around the house. Later last night, as I was trying to get her ready for bed, she found Rog’s running shoes, and this photo opportunity presented itself. I now have it saved as my desktop background here at work. This kid is such a clown.

Also of note, she has my shoes on the wrong feet. I guess it's hard to tell when they're that big. I found it funny, though.

Owww...

It seems as though Teagan has discovered the power of her voice. Now we have to teach her the difference between outside voices and inside voices. This weekend she started jabbering at a very high level of volume. It was funny at first, especially witnessing the excitement that went along with the voice, but by the end of the weekend and several car rides, our ears were ringing. Here's a tiny snippet of what we endured this weekend. (She recovered well from her wipeout.)

On a more somber note, in response to the most recent local tragedy, our heart goes out to the family and friends of Ryan Hummert, a rookie firefighter killed in a senseless act of violence this morning in a nearby neighborhood.

How to Dress Up a Birthday Suit

I've had yet another confirmation that Teagan has some of my sister in her. The girl knows how to accessorize. She doesn't get that from me. This past Saturday she decided she wanted to wear Mrs. Potato Head's earrings. Then she decided she wanted her daddy to wear Mrs. Potato Head's earrings. And Mr. Potato Head's hat. So they played dress up for a little while. I found it quite amusing.
The last picture is right after a bath. She can't go anywhere without her purse!

Two Posts In One Day!

A Future Vogue Model?

A Case of the Mondays

Not that this is a surprise, but we're sorry our weekend is over. It was a good weekend. We got some work done on the house and we also had some fun with various parties and other gatherings with friends.
Friday was the 4th, one of my personal favorite holidays. I don't really know why, exactly. I think fireworks are overrated, and more often than not it's too hot to even move, but I look forward to it every year. This year was a special treat because the weather was beautiful. We got to spend time with friends and walked up to Kirkwood Park to watch the display. Teagan's still a little young for the fireworks. I think she probably would have enjoyed them, but we didn't want her staying up too late, so after she played for awhile with the other kids, she got to go spend the night at Mimi and Poppi's house.
Saturday Rog and I worked on the house some more. We now have everything mostly painted, and Rog has all of the upper cabinets hung. This week he's working on flooring.
Yesterday morning we took a trip to Grant's Farm with the Judges. Grant's Farm holds a special place in my heart. It used to be a tradition to go there with my family when my grandparents came into town, so I think about them whenever I visit. I'm afraid its days may be numbered with the looming AB takeover.
Teagan was more interested in the animals than she was a year or so ago, but I think she was even more fascinated with being able to run around. Even though we planned the trip for early in the morning before the kids' naps, our plan backfired and they both became tired and a bit cranky earlier than we had hoped. We tried.
Finally, last night we celebrated my friend Nikki's 30th birthday with a big surprise bash. It was fun to see so many people that I haven't seen in years. Teagan was all decked out in a cute dress, but I know she would have much rather been running around in her diaper. It was so hot, I would have preferred that, too. I was sad to wake up and get back to work today, but we do what we have to do!

These Boots Are Made for Walkin'

Last weekend Teagan received some hand-me-downs from a little girl that lives next door to my parents' house. She quickly realized that the little pink suede boots fit her perfectly and she likes to wear them as much as possible, whether we're going on a walk or she's in her pajamas getting ready for bed. If this interest in shoes develops into something much more, I'm afraid it will be confirmed that I have given birth to a clone of my sister. The first picture is what originally tipped me off to this possibility. The next pictures are of Teagan showing off her new shoes. Lord, help us all! (Just kidding, Erin!)
